Chapter Six

Sarah used some glass cleaner and an old rag to wipe her fingerprints from the new picture window in the living room. She had finally replaced it with the leftover money from Mike, after repaying the money she owed on the house.

The bank stopped the foreclosure.

She could open the heavy drapes that had been hiding the tarp and broken window, allowing sunlight to stream into the house. The past two weeks had gone by in a state of disbelief. She could keep her house.

Even the snow melted a bit. Sure, it still covered everything, but it hadn’t snowed again since the big storm. And Mike Cavender hadn’t contacted her to try to get her to sell. She almost wished he would, just so she could talk to him again. Almost.

Someone knocked at her door.

Sarah found herself hoping that someone would be Mike as she ran from the living room to the kitchen and opened the door. Warmth crept up her cheeks as she opened the door and saw him standing there, his hands in the pockets of his long wool coat.

“Mike.”

“Just picking up my car.” He nodded toward the black Mercedes parked in front of her property. “Joey actually did a really good job.”

He’s hotter than I remember him being. How is that even possible?

Sarah smiled. “What have you been up to?”

Mike ignored her question. “Do you want to go for a walk or something? It’s cold but really sunny out. And it’s not snowing.”

Sarah grabbed her coat and hat and gloves and stepped outside, taking in his outfit. He wore proper snow boots.

“I see you’re prepared this time.” Sarah took in his heavy gloves and hat that covered most of his dark hair.

“You taught me well. Where shall we go?” He put his arm out and Sarah took his elbow.

“How about someplace neutral? Someplace I don’t own and someplace you don’t own?” Sarah suggested.

“Deal.” Mike let her lead the way. “Where are we going?”

“Not far. It’s only a half hour hike north. Can you handle it?”

Mike laughed. “Seeing as how I’m missing my gym workout today, I think a half hour hike through the snow is just what the doctor ordered.”

They walked in companionable silence.

“How’s Tabasco?” Mike finally asked.

“He misses you. But no one’s responded yet to the ‘Found Cat’ signs I put in the post office and the grocery store, so it looks like you’ll be able to adopt him soon. In the meantime, he doesn’t seem to mind not having the run of the house. Every time I see that cat I let him rub against me so the dogs get used to his scent. Sooner or later the dogs won’t go crazy when they see the cat, and then Tabasco will have full run of the house.”

“That’s good. Can I visit him when we get back from our hike?”

Sarah laughed. “You really miss him, don’t you.”

“Yes. Weird, I know.” He looked at her and Sarah felt a shiver that had nothing to do with the cold.
